Surfing: From Ancient Polynesia to the Olympic Stage

Surfing, more than a sport, is a cultural expression and a lifestyle that captivates millions worldwide. With deep roots in human history and a meteoric rise to the global sporting arena, including its recent debut at the Olympic Games, surfing continues to fascinate and inspire.

What is Surfing?

At its core, surfing is a water sport that involves gliding across the surface of a wave, standing on a board. Considered an extreme and adventure sport, surfing demands a unique combination of physical and mental skills [1, 2]. Surfers seek the perfect wave, using the force of nature to perform maneuvers and express their creativity on the water.

Essential Characteristics of a Surfer:

To master the waves, a surfer needs a diverse set of attributes [3]:

•Balance: Fundamental for standing on the board and navigating the wave.

•Speed and Agility: Necessary for paddling, positioning correctly, and reacting quickly to changes in the wave.

•Physical Fitness: Arm strength for paddling, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility are crucial.

•Swimming Ability: Essential for safety, especially in more challenging sea conditions.

•Calmness and Concentration: The ability to read the ocean, predict wave behavior, and maintain serenity under pressure.

Beyond the physical aspect, surfing is intrinsically linked to a lifestyle that values connection with nature, respect for the ocean, and a pursuit of freedom and adventure [4, 5].

A Millennial History: From Polynesian Roots to Global Popularization

The history of surfing is as vast as the ocean itself. The earliest evidence of the practice dates back to Polynesian peoples, who possibly glided on waves over 3,500 years ago. Cultures such as the Hawaiians, Samoans, and Tahitians already practiced surfing, which was more than a pastime; it was an integral part of their culture, religion, and social hierarchy. Known as the "sport of kings" or "sport of gods," surfing was practiced by royalty and commoners alike, with boards of different sizes and meanings [6, 7, 8].

The first official record of the sport in Hawaii in the 18th century by European explorers marked the beginning of its documentation. However, it was only in the 20th century that surfing began to gain global popularity, driven by figures like Duke Kahanamoku, the "father of modern surfing," who popularized the sport in the United States and beyond [9]. Since then, surfing has evolved, with the emergence of different styles, from classic, which values elegance and fluidity, to modern, focused on radical and progressive maneuvers [10].

Surfing at the Olympic Games: A New Era

The inclusion of surfing in the Olympic Games marked a significant chapter in the sport's history, elevating it to an unprecedented level of global recognition. Surfing made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic [11, 12]. The competition featured men's and women's events, where elite athletes showcased the beauty and intensity of the sport.

Olympic Venues and Rules:

•Tokyo 2020 (2021): Competitions were held at Tsurigasaki Beach in Japan.

•Paris 2024: For the Paris 2024 Games, surfing will be held at an iconic and challenging location: Teahupoʻo, Tahiti, approximately 15,000 kilometers from the French capital. The choice of Teahupoʻo, famous for its powerful, barreling waves, reflects the desire to provide an authentic and high-performance spectacle [13, 14].

•Los Angeles 2028: The Organizing Committee has already announced that surfing will be held at Trestles Beach, California, one of the most famous surf breaks in the United States [15].

The basic rules of Olympic surfing involve 30-minute heats, where surfers compete to catch the best waves. Each wave is evaluated by a panel of judges based on criteria such as degree of difficulty, innovation, variety, speed, power, and flow. The two best waves of each surfer are combined to form the total score. The priority rule is crucial: the surfer closest to the peak of the wave has the right to catch it, and others must yield [16, 17, 18].

Surfing's journey, from ancient Polynesian traditions to the Olympic spotlight, is a testament to its resilience and universal appeal. As a sport and a lifestyle, surfing continues to inspire a deep connection with the ocean and the celebration of nature.
